Benny's Burrow

Benny

These web pages are dedicated to the memory of Benny, my "Velveteen Rabbit".

Benny was my first pet, my first rabbit, my first love of the fur kind.

I had never had a pet before. One day, we were reading the newspaper and there was a story of a rabbit who had been dumped and neded a good home. We called the newspaper and left several messages but they never called us back. I did not know, at that time in my life, that there were so many rabbits in shelters waiting for homes so we went to pet stores searching for a rabbit. We saw Benny and she changed our lives forever. She was the biggest bunny in the aquarium container - she was an Easter returnee. She was playing and digging, active and having fun. Then she lay down next to a brown and white castor rex bunny. We bought Benny from that pet store on May 6, 1994 and went back to buy her pal, Bunny Bun, on May 9, 1994.

She was very mischevious and the smartest of all bunnies. She knew how to pull the strings in our hearts. She teased everyone. She loved to flag her tail at other bunnies and they would chase her but she would always get away - she was too fast for them and too clever. She loved Ashy. She loved to get attention and, when she wanted it, she would lift her tail and pee in the wrong place. We would say "No, Benny, no!" but she would let it fly. She even did this at the vet's office. When she was inside the carrier on the floor, she lifted her tail in front of the door and peed on the vet's shoes.

She was adorable and sweet and I loved her so much.

Sadly, on May 1, 1999, just 5 days short of her 5-year Adoption Day she died a horrific death from what we believe to be mycotoxin poisoning in hay and pellets.

We buried her next to a rock, adjacent to Charky and Ash's grave, in the forest. We read her a letter and buried it with her. We planted a beautiful pink hibiscus, a tulip and azaleas at her gravesite.

After she died, weird things happened...

I miss her more than words can express.

Benny's Belly

We will miss her till we see her again...
